Vanessa Williams1968年3月18日出生于美國紐約的達里鎮(Tarrytown)。從小就深受百老匯(Broadway)音樂演出的熏陶。1985年她進入了錫拉丘茲(Syracuse)大學攻讀音樂戲劇。她在影視和歌唱事業上都頗有建樹。但她的成功來之不易，自從她成為首位奪得“美國小姐”(Miss USA)的黑人后，有關她的流言就一直不斷。而后來，她開始了音樂事業方面的追求。成為飛翔唱片公司(水銀唱片公司Mercury Records旗下的子公司)的簽約歌手。她的丈夫，Ramon Harvey,親自擔任她的經紀人。然而，在此期間，她的音樂天才并沒有得到很好的發揮。她音樂事業的真正開始是1989年其專輯The Right Stuff推出之后。這張專輯共收錄有包括He's Got the Look、Daring I 等8首歌，并使其獲得了NAACP Image Award大獎。而1991年推出的第二張專輯The Comfort Zone中單曲“Save the Best for Last"使她再次奪得該獎項。且該專輯摘取了兩個白金銷量。她的第三張專輯The Sweetest Days由于剛好第三個孩子出生，推遲了三年直到1995年才完成。在這張專輯中表現了更高的創造力和斗志。同年為迪士尼動畫片《風中奇緣》(Pocahontas)演唱的主題曲《風之色彩》Colors ofthe Wind反應尤為火爆。1998推出了其出道十年的精選集Greatest Hits--the First Ten Years。 Vanessa Williams的倩影也頻頻出現于銀幕和熒屏。她曾先后出演過Motown Returns to the Apollo、Kid Who Loved Christmas(1990)、Stompin' at the Savoy(1992)、 Another You(1991)、Light it Up(1999)、 閃箭(Shaft)(2000)等，其中Motown Returns to the Apollo曾榮獲Emmy獎。
