　　當時，“披頭士”們想要做一張關于童年的專輯，這個念頭起源于列儂的一首關于過往生活的長詩。

　　這首歌的歌詞描述了列儂從家到碼頭的巴士之旅。長長的旅途穿越利物浦，他捕捉了沿途所見及所聞。然而寫成之后，列儂覺得歌詞太過冗長和無趣，像是一個白描的日記。于是他決定讓歌詞更能引起人們的共鳴，于是把主題改成了更廣泛意義上的回顧過去：懷念失去的童年和老友。

　　歌詞到后來出現轉折——列儂告訴人們過去的并非是最好的。這實際是一首情歌，列儂想說的是，盡管他對過去一往情深，但是更愛現在的她。這個轉折讓這首歌更積極，也更成熟。
